Not a good check-up

Bonnie just called from the clinic with Josh’s check-up. Seems everything looks bad, bad or bad. He lost 5 more pounds. He’s down to 75 lbs. I don’t know how he can go on like that without getting more nourishment somehow. He was dehydrated too. They blamed both the weight loss and the dehydration on his continuing diarrhea. Right now they’ve got him hooked up to an IV to get fluids into him and they will order more IV fluids for him at home, so we’ll be hooking him up at home to keep him hydrated. They’re testing a stool sample to check for viral infection.

They were mainly concerned because his blood tests came back with mostly elevated levels. Liver enzymes were up. That, of course, is our biggest concern since it’s a major organ. It could be GVH attacking the liver. It’s also possible that it’s Hepatitis C given all the transfusions he’s had, although Red Cross was testing for that before he started getting blood. They’re running additional blood tests now to rule that out. If the counts continue to climb or stay elevated they’ll want to biopsy the liver.

His white cells and neutrophils were elevated. That could possibly be viral. It could also be an indication of leukemia. He’s scheduled for a bone marrow aspiration Thursday to rule out possible leukemia. What if? We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Right now it’s a bridge too far for me.
